Sinead and Katie from Lucan Community College Tackle Climate Change with Minister Naughten
For our UNICEF presentation we wanted to do it under the title of 'Climate change and Global goals'
Over the next few weeks we researched this topic to ensure we knew almost everything relevant on this topic before presenting it to any teacher or class.
We put together a presentation via PowerPoint and we began using everything we learnt and putting it into presentation form. We use pictures and easy language to make it easy for the students to grasp. We put together a word search for them to do and we also gave them an action project which was to either create a poster on the information that they have learned or write a letter to the Minister for Communication, Climate Change and Environment. We then gave it to our coordinating teacher and she gave us some advice on how we could improve the presentation in different areas.
On the 20th of February we went into a first year CSPE class and began showing them the presentation we had put together, they seemed to be very engaged in the topic we showed them, and they also learned about how this situation can affect them. Before this presentation we were nervous to talk in front of the class but as the presentation went on we became more calm.We then gave them their action project which was the poster, or the postcard and we explained what we needed them to do, we gave them two weeks to finish this and we collected them.
We picked a winner for both the poster and postcard and the winners received a small prize and a prize for participating.
We then sent the posters and postcards to the Minister of Environment and we got a reply sent back to us today.
After having this presentation, we have become more confident while giving presentations and happy that we have made a group of young people more aware of global warming and have put pressure on the government. We are also happy that we gained more knowledge on this topic.
