Water & Society

September 4, 2016

All weekend we've been talking water: on the blog, on social media #WaterIs, and now we're talking society.

Each day, women and girls around the globe spend a collective 200 million hours collecting water. Not only is this back-breaking and exhausting work, but puts girls in a vulnerable position travelling miles from home daily, often unaccompanied. These are hours that could be spent in school, and now we know that girls who stay in school have a better standard of living than those who don't.

Look at Aysha's daily routine living in Ethiopia, which is affected by the El Nino phenomenon.

What can you do to help?

Conserve water!

This one is simple, and you've heard it one thousand times previously, but it still rings true!

Collect rainwater

In Ireland this has become popular when the Water Charge was introduced, ask around your community and see how it works!
