Selfies for Peace & The Olympic Truce

August 10, 2016

This photo has been doing the rounds on social media over the past few days. Pictured above are South Korean gymnast Lee Eun Ju taking a selfie with North Korean gymnast Hong Un Jong. Notable, Lee Eun Ju is making a peace sign for the photo.

Why is the moment making waves?

The two states are technically at war with one and other, and have a hostile relationship. The Olympics present a rare opportunity for their national representatives to mix. The 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney saw the two states compete together as one team, Korea. Footage from the Opening Ceremony shows the historical moment.

The Olympic Truce

During the Ancient Olympic Games, Ekecheria or The Olympic Truce was put in place so that all wars were halted until the Games were completed. This ensured that athletes could travel to and from the games safely.

In 1993 the United Nations adopted a Resolution observing the Olympic Truce.

The Resolution asked UN Member States to observe The Olympic Truce from seven days before the Games, to seven days after the Games. It recognised that the aim of the Olympics is to mobilise the youth of the world in the cause of peace, through sport.

Recognizing that the goal of the Olympic Movement is to build a peaceful and better world by educating the youth of the world through sport, practised without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding, promoted by friendship, solidarity and fair play,

This year, the International Olympic Truce Centre erected a Truce Wall in the Olympic Village where they are asking athletes to sign for peace.

This year UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon called all warring parties to put down their arms this summer and observe the Olympic Truce.
