Last Wednesday UNICEF Ireland marked the life and legacy of Roger Casement and his humanitarian work at Casement Aerodrome, Baldonnel, Co. Dublin. UNICEF Ireland joined Irish Aid, the Irish Defence Forces UN Peacekeepers, and other NGOs for a panel discussion on Irish humanitarians today, and enjoyed displays from the Army and the Air Corps.

While often recognised for his role with the Irish Volunteers during the 1916 Rising, Roger Casement was a prominent diplomat, who was knighted for his service in the British Colonial Office. He dedicated his early career to humanitarian efforts in Africa, and South America, where the injustices of slavery and exploitation initiated a humanitarian response from Casement. 

The UNICEF Field Tent showcased Emergency Lessons, which aims to raise awareness of the necessity of education during, and in the aftermath of, humanitarian crises and emergencies.
